Artwork Description
This project is composed of seven wooden masks. The idea of masks came from digital Pop Culture, where masks are usually used as a sign of hiding or switching identity, showing another side of a person, or as a symbol of mystery.  Mask is a dividing line of light and shadow, real and fake, realistic and illusion.
The idea for this project comes from Chinese traditional opera masks, I used those traditional elements as my initial design inspiration and integrated them with pop culture elements. I depart my design from the common mask design by blurring facial features and using asymmetrical design, then made a bolder attempt with comic style and Tokusatsu Kaiju element.
I always consider "never grow up" as the best wish in the world. Everyone is a child inside but most of us lost the sense of childlike while growing up. We all have to wear masks and play roles on the stage of society. We make masks for ourselves, we draw new faces that conform to what others want us to be, we become someone that others need us to be, but those masks, are not a part of ourselves.
There are lights on the mask, and shadow behind the mask, but, are you still able to take off your mask?
